The current QX80, which debuted as the QX56 a decade ago, is beginning to show its age, notably on the inside. A lackluster cabin and dated design cause it to lag behind more contemporary competitors like the Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator.
If you’re looking for a Japanese luxury car but don’t want to pay as much as the Lexus LX 570, this is an excellent option! Although the QX80’s 400 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft. Of torque aren’t the best in the industry; they’re more than enough. With the captain’s seats in row two, four people may comfortably ride and bring along many big-box items. The NHTSA or IIHS hasn’t evaluated the QX80. Still, it comes equipped with standard automated emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and a rear camera mirror and a surround-view video system. If the three-seat second row option is selected, the QX80 can nibble away the miles with five people on board. Long legs and tall torsos will find enough room and support in those four spots, and the second row is broad enough to provide the third seat plenty of head and shoulder room. In the third row, the legroom isn’t quite as generous, but it’s plenty for two or three small passengers to sit comfortably.
The QX80 has 16.6 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row, which is ample for sporting equipment. Long-distance travelers will appreciate the 49.6 cubic feet of extra space behind row two. The QX80 has a total of 95.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row. However, we’d be hesitant to use it as a storage facility. Some harsh trim on the doors and an unlined glovebox are noticeable, but overall, the interior is well-stocked with leather and wood. When it comes to the sense of touch, the nappa leather makes it more luxurious.
The QX80’s 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque are delivered by a smooth 5.6-liter V-8 with a rich but quiet exhaust sound. It’s a powerful engine that works well with a 7-speed automatic transmission to propel a car weighing between 5,678 and 5,813 pounds. That’s a lot of power, but the QX80 is quick off the line. It’s capable of towing up to 8,500 kg thanks to a ladder frame. With a 2-speed transfer case and 9.2 inches of ground clearance, it’s capable of driving off-road, but we wouldn’t put it through anything that would damage its paint or harm its leather.
For that ability, it sacrifices responsiveness on the pavement. Lacking steering sensation, the QX80 is difficult to park in a small space. Even with 22-inch wheels, the ride is smooth and composed, although curving roads cause a lot of body lean. To put it another way, the Sensory edition’s adjustable hydraulic suspension doesn’t make the car want speed.
